After years of work by Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary veterinary team and many other people on this fatal digestive and neurological syndrome that affects their Western chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus), the metagenomic microbiological studies led by Tony Goldberg's team in the University of Wisconsin have identified a novel species of Sarcina as associated with this devastating syndrome. The results have been published in Nature Communications (Nat Commun. 2021 Feb 3; 12 (1): 763. Doi: 10.1038 / s41467-021-21012-x). I am proud that Noah's Path was chosen by Tacugama to advise on pathology studies starting in 2015, in which we have been able to identify acute gastric dilatation and emphysematous typhlitis in several of the affected patients; These lesions have been repeatedly described in humans and other species with gastrointestinal infections by Sarcina, so this study is the first step in trying to consistently demonstrate a role of this novel pathogen in the development of this syndrome. Other factors may be involved, such as alterations in the microenvironment of the gastrointestinal content of various origins that favor the proliferation of Sarcina. This finding can contribute significantly to preventing the appearance of new cases in the sanctuary and treating chimpanzees that could be affected in the future, and therefore contribute to the conservation of this critically endangered subspecies.
