Diagnosing the index case and initiating in 2008 the first study of this new emerging infection of ferrets: Pseudomonas luteola. Initially identified as a respiratory/thoracic/mediastinal pathogen (pyothorax, bronchopneumonia, pleuritis, mediastinitis/mediastinal masses) in ferrets, recent studies indicate P. luteola is a relevant cause of subcutaneous abscesses and pyogranulomas with diverse locations, as well as of intra-abdominal abscesses in this species. Pseudomonas luteola is also a cause of infections in human beings (particularly nosocomial infections).
